Interview with the Property Owner

From Australia

Leith & Jarrod

《 Why did you build your house? 》

Jarrod and I first travelled to Hakuba in 2011 with a group of old friends we lived with in Hopfgarten, an Austrian village in the Tirol region, in the winter of 2005/06. We instantly fell in love with Hakuba and Japanese culture and began to dream of owning our own place.

We visited Japanese real estate web pages regularly and eventually in 2018, found the courage to travel over for four nights to inspect a place that ended up not being suitable at all!   We met with real estate agents and visited several homes before finally, on our very last day, we were introduced to the owners of the beautiful log home that is now Haus Yuki.  It was owned by a flute maker and his wife, who had designed the home with the loft for his music studio and the workshop to make his flutes. (It has been a regret of mine that I never took a photograph with him and his wife at settlement of our purchase of his home.)

Since our first trip to Hakuba we have had two boys who share our love for Japan.  While working towards our purchase our boys, then 2 and 5 years old, referred to our Hakuba home as our “Snow house”.  And from this came Haus Yuki’s name.  We have used Haus as a tribute to our beginning in the Austrian Tirol region and Yuki in reference to snow, our snow house.

《 How would you like HAUS YUKI guests to enjoy your house? 》

We want our guests to feel welcome at Haus Yuki and hope their stay helps build some wonderful memories for their families and friends.
